This is what a political cartoon should be like: sending a powerful message through a simple picture.
I am privileged to be able to attend a University thanks to having a financially supportive family. I work a minimum-wage job to help pay for living expenses and I have co-workers who work 50+ hours a week at multiple jobs to support their family while still being in poverty.
As this cartoon depicts, some politicians suggest that if people just “keep working” they will be able to rise out of the situation they are in. There are also politicians who take it a step further and don’t believe in even having a minimum wage. There are five states that don’t have their own minimum wage so they default to the federal government’s, which is $7.25 per hour. That means that a worker would make $15,080 working full-time, year round (Source: http://raisetheminimumwage.org/pages/qanda).
$15,080.
Imagine having to pay for rent. Daycare. School supplies. Food. Heat. Clothing. Healthcare. And everything else you would need for your family. Would that be enough?
The minimum wage is NOT a livable wage.
We should not be talking about abolishing it, but RAISING it.

Eh, at the current moment I want to curl up on my couch and not move. I can’t say I want to that much.
So in love with this.
